Prohibit Landlords from Unlawfully Entering Properties and Harming Pets
The Issue
I still remember that fateful day when I returned home from work to a nightmarish scene; my landlord had entered my rental property through the back window and shot my beloved dog. No pet owner or pet should ever have to experience such a horrific and traumatic incident.
Such instances of landlords unlawfully entering tenants' homes and injuring or killing pets are sadly not unheard of. The American Housing Survey, conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, reports that over 85 million U.S households own a pet. Despite such a large number, tenants and pet owners have minimal legal protection from such invasions of privacy and subsequent animal harm.
This flagrant disregard for privacy and animal rights must end. We need legislation that upholds and protects the rights of renters from unlawful property intrusions by landlords, especially ones that lead to senseless harm to our innocent pets. Let us strive for a society where everyone, including our pets, can feel safe and protected in their homes.
In Kentucky, animal cruelty is only a misdemeanor so we would like to change it to a Felony to hopefully get some sort of sustice in devastating situations like these. The Law will be called “Detroit Clause” in regards to Justice For Detroit.
Sign this petition and stand up for renters and pet rights. Let's put an end to these uncalled for violations and ensure that our furry companions are not victims of intrusive landlords disrespectful of privacy and life.
