The Issue

As a keen observer of wildlife, I've had the fortune of witnessing the natural beauty of Black Bears in Florida. Gentle, graceful creatures, they are, with giant paws and curious eyes, desperately foraging for food. Much like our alligators, they do not mean harm if left alone to live their lives. Our coexistence may be a bit awkward, but it's possible and even beautiful if we choose respect and distance over fear.

Unfortunately, the state of Florida still allows these animals to be hunted. We, humans, claim an unfair share of their habitats, leaving them with dwindling resources and limited space. Despite our encroachment, they pose little threat to us if we respect their space.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that the Black Bear population has grown robustly over the past few decades. Critics of the hunting ban often use this as an argument for lifting it. But, it's crucial to remember that the bear population is just recovering from historic lows. It's our duty to sustain these numbers, for the bears and our ecosystems ("Florida's Bear Management Plan," FWC, 2012).

Let the Black Bears of Florida roam freely, unthreatened by the fear of hunters. It's time we respect their right to life and ensure proper cohabitation strategies instead of resorting to violence. Sign this petition to stand against bear hunting in Florida.
