Prohibit Halal Slaughter in the United Kingdom
Prohibit Halal Slaughter in the United Kingdom
The Issue
My deep love for animals fuels this request for change. As someone fervently committed to animal welfare, I believe our animals deserve so much better than this. It is disheartening to me and many other UK citizens that we have allowed a method of animal slaughter that seems to be inhumane and contrary to our interests of securing better treatment for animals.
In the United Kingdom, halal slaughter, which is killing an animal by a single cut to the throat allowing the blood to drain out, has raised concern among many animal rights activists and the general public alike. I believe it's our moral obligation to ensure that all animals are treated humanely, and this includes their method of slaughter.
Aside from the potential for prolonged suffering, there are also issues associated with Halal slaughter that impact our public health. According to a study from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), meat from animals that were not stunned before they were killed is more likely to carry food-borne pathogens such as E.coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, compared to slaughter where stunning was applied (EFSA Journal, 2004).
Our request is simple. Consider regulatory changes to prohibit Halal slaughter without pre-stunning. The UK Rabbinical authorities for Shechita - the Jewish humane method of animal slaughter - have accepted the use of post-cut stunning, potentially reducing animal suffering. So, why can't we consider the same for Halal?
It's not about infringing upon religious rights. It's about finding a balanced ground where we can respect religious beliefs while also ensuring that our animal welfare standards are met. Let's make a stand for what’s right and ensure that our laws reflect our dedication to animal welfare. Please sign this petition to encourage the UK Government to take decisive action on this matter.
