Prohibit Fireworks in Sacramento County to Protect Veterans, Pets, and Prevent Fires

The Issue

Each year in Sacramento County, our community suffers the familiar dread of the set-off fireworks around the Fourth of July period. I was forced to helplessly standby while my dogs agonized in fear due to the loud, deafening noise. My dogs are not alone in this predicament; many pets in Sacramento suffer in the same way - their fear sometimes extends far beyond the holiday, causing long-term distress. The ordeal isn't confined to animals alone. Many of our brave veterans, who have served and protected our country, have their peace violated by these loud, triggering fireworks. Simultaneously, the risk of fires amplifies, which have proven disastrous in the past. I have personally witnessed the horrific sight of an entire neighborhood in flames due to legal fireworks being used in hazardous, dry conditions. It's time we call for an end to this avoidable destruction and trauma.

Presently, fireworks act as a form of fundraising for various institutions, but surely, we can find safer alternative methods to do so. The American Pyrotechnics Association reports that roughly 19,500 fires are caused by fireworks every year nationwide, with many occurring around the Fourth of July (National Fire Protection Association). These fireworks not only pose a significant threat to properties but also to lives and our environment.

In California, fire officials attribute 90% of wildfires to human causes - including firework usage (CAL FIRE). Given that Sacramento County falls within California's wildfire-prone areas, it's crucial to reduce every possible trigger, including fireworks.

Let us prioritize the safety and peace of everyone in our community, humans and animals alike, over momentary celebratory sparks. Please sign this petition urging the Sacramento County officials to ban fireworks. It's time we stopped fearing every Fourth of July and started creating safer traditions for all. The change starts here, and it starts with your signature.
