Prohibit Easter Events Involving Rabbits and Other Small Animals in Public Spaces
The Issue
After being told by a manager of a restaurant “I don’t care about the welfare of animals only profit” in a response to raising concerns over ‘breakfast with bunnies’ an Easter event for children. I contacted the council who told me to contact Scottish SSPCA who advised because it’s a future event I will need to speak to the council, I’m still waiting to hear back from them. I decided to start this petition to ban events involving rabbits and other small animals during Easter celebrations in high-traffic environments like restaurants and shopping centres. These events, such as ‘Breakfast with Bunnies,' ostensibly designed to entertain children and families, can be heavily distressing for the animals who involved. Rabbits, for instance, are naturally timid creatures, and exposure to loud noises, crowded places, and excessive handling can be a great cause of anxiety for them. According to the House Rabbit Society, more rabbits are abandoned to shelters in the months following Easter than any other time of the year and 100,000 are abandoned per year. This speaks volumes about the unintended consequences of these seemingly harmless events. I believe that Easter festivities can be celebrated without compromising the welfare of our small friends. I urge you to sign this petition, demonstrating your commitment to creating a more compassionate and just society for all animal species. I fear as this is becoming the new ‘normal’ the popularity will increase year after year putting the life’s of many innocent animals at the risk of GI stasis and death after a ‘breakfast with bunnies’ Easter event. Thank you for signing. Lauren x
