Prohibit Dogs and Puppies from Children's Parks and Playgrounds in the UK
The Issue
My young daughter, who is Autistic with major Cynophobia finds it traumatising to encounter dogs whilst in children's parks and in playgrounds. This experience is not unique to her. Many children, particularly those on the spectrum, or who are neurodiverse, find interactions with dogs in these spaces distressing. Dogs can be aggressive, loud and intimidating. Their behaviour can be unpredictable and there is always the risk they may bite. These characteristics make them unsuitable for environments designed for children's play.
In 2019 alone there were over 7,500 admissions to NHS hospitals due to dog bites or strikes (Source: NHS Digital). The presence of dogs in playgrounds increases this risk unnecessarily. Furthermore, a study published by the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders found individuals on the autism spectrum are more likely to have fears related to animals (Source: Journal of Autism & Developmental Disorders).
We believe that kids parks and playgrounds should be safe spaces where all children can go and play without any fear or anxiety.
Therefore we call upon local authorities across the UK to implement regulations prohibiting dogs from entering any kids park or playground.
