Prohibit data centers in Plumsted Township zoning districts
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the potential establishment of data centers in Plumsted Township, NJ, as they pose significant risks to our community's well-being and environment. Data centers have a substantial negative impact on towns that host them. They bring minimal job creation, as these facilities are generally automated and do not require a large workforce. Additionally, they contribute to a vast amount of environmental pollution, significantly affecting air quality, water resources, and local biodiversity.
The presence of data centers transforms the character of rural and suburban areas. These massive, high-tech warehouses consume vast quantities of electricity, making them notorious energy guzzlers. For example, the average data center is estimated to use over 100 times more electricity than a standard commercial building. This exorbitant energy use often leads to increased utility bills for residents as power companies attempt to compensate for the high demand.
Furthermore, the effects of living near a data center are still not comprehensively studied. There is insufficient research addressing the potential impact on human health, such as noise pollution resulting from the cooling systems and backup generators used to power these centers. Such noise pollution can disturb the peace and serenity of residential areas and can have adverse health effects like sleep disturbances and increased stress.
Data centers also sacrifice precious land that could be used for community benefit, whether it's for parks, residential areas, or local businesses that truly add value to our community. By consuming vast acreage, they hinder the potential growth and development of our neighborhoods.
We must act now to protect the unique character and health of Plumsted Township. I urge the local zoning authorities to define zoning laws that explicitly prohibit the establishment of data centers in all zoning districts within Plumsted Township. Let's preserve the integrity of our township by ensuring that this industrial footprint does not overshadow the sustainability and quality of life that we cherish.
Please sign this petition to make a stand against data centers in Plumsted Township and safeguard our community's future.
