Prohibit commercial licensing of AI-generated music

Prohibit commercial licensing of AI-generated music
The Issue
My name is Bryton Wilson (aka sleepmachine). As a dedicated producer, music composer, and musician who has painstakingly crafted and published numerous musical works, it has come to my attention that my creations, alongside those of my fellow artists, are being utilized without consent to train AI music models. This not only undermines the immense effort and originality invested in our work but also raises a profound concern regarding the future of music production and the livelihoods of countless musicians worldwide.
Artificial intelligence has revolutionized various sectors, including music, with the potential to create compositions that were once only possible through human creativity and talent. However, allowing AI-generated music to be licensed commercially for profit through digital service providers (DSPs) poses a significant threat to the music industry and the artists it serves. According to a report from the Center for Data Innovation, the global market for AI in the creative arts is projected to grow exponentially, with music being a significant segment. This growth, if not checked, could see human musicians severely impacted or even rendered obsolete.
The commercial exploitation of AI-generated music disregards the human touch and emotional connection that real artists provide through their work. By keeping AI-generated music free for use in the public domain, we can ensure that human creativity remains valued and protected, while also allowing AI-generated compositions to contribute to cultural enrichment without overshadowing genuine artistry.
It's crucial to draw a line now and urge lawmakers to prohibit the licensing of AI-generated music for profit through DSPs. This measure will safeguard the future of music and ensure that artists continue to receive recognition and fair compensation for their irreplaceable contributions.
We call on policymakers, industry leaders, and music lovers to support this initiative to keep AI-generated music where it belongs - free in the public domain. We also ask DSPs to implement a track scanning feature to spot and tag AI-generated music, complete with a claims feature if someone's track was incorrectly marked as AI-generated. Please sign this petition to make a difference for the future of music and its creators.
