The Issue

PLEASE ATTEND THE NEXT COUNCIL MEETING, NOVEMBER 18TH AT 7 PM - regarding a change to the ordinance restricting chickens and livestock within the Borough.  Go to Wind Gap Borough website and check the borough council meeting minutes for October 21, 2025 to see who made the request under the first Public Comment.

Residents of Wind Gap, PA cherish the peace and quiet of their charming neighborhoods, but this tranquility is under threat. The introduction of chickens into residential areas has raised significant concerns among community members. The serene ambience of our lovely streets is being disturbed by the constant clucking and crowing of these birds. Moreover, the presence of chickens can invite additional challenges such as odors and increased pests including rodents and insects, which thrive in these environments.

The health and cleanliness of our neighborhoods are critically important. Chickens, if not managed properly, can become carriers of diseases such as salmonella, which poses a health risk, particularly to children and the elderly. This potential health hazard is exacerbated when birds are kept in close proximity to homes, schools, and playgrounds.

Additionally, the aesthetics of our neighborhoods are at stake. Many residents take pride in maintaining their homes and gardens, and the presence of chicken coops can detract from the visual appeal and property values.

There are designated agricultural zones in Wind Gap which are more suited for raising chickens. By keeping these areas separate, we ensure that livestock like chickens do not infringe upon residential living spaces. This separation is critical not only for maintaining the harmony of our neighborhoods but also for the welfare of the animals, who require specialized care and space.

We call upon the local government and community leaders to keep the ordinances that restrict the keeping of chickens in residential neighborhoods in Wind Gap. This will help preserve the quality of life and the unique character of our community.

Let's come together as residents and protect the integrity of our neighborhood spaces. Sign this petition to urge the local authorities to take immediate action for the betterment of our community.
