Prohibit Artificial Turf and Implement Environmentally Safe Sports Infrastructure

The Issue

As a mother of four, I often visit Eucalyptus Park along with my children. In my roles as an environmental consultant, educator, master gardener and Hawthorne commissioner of community services and fine arts, I understand the importance of green spaces and their impact on our well-being and the health of our planet. It is with this understanding that I urge our community members to support the prohibition of artificial turf in our city, especially in major recreational areas like Eucalyptus Park.

I propose implementing environmentally safe, nature-based solutions such as safe clean water capturing systems under multi-sports natural grass fields, as part of the Eucalyptus Park improvement project. Such projects not only maintain the aesthetic of our parks but also help conserve water, a precious resource. Natural grass fields can absorb and store rainwater, preventing rapid evaporation thereby contributing to the replenishment of groundwater reserves (Environmental Protection Agency).

Moreover, natural grass fields are safer for active children. Artificial turfs tend to heat up more in sun exposure which can cause burns and other heat-related injuries in children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Choosing natural solutions benefits our community, symbiotically balancing human enjoyment and environmental sustainability. Let's work together to make our city a model for sustainable recreational spaces, turning "the city of good neighbors" into "the city of great stewards".
