Prohibit Alcohol Delivery via Uber Eats and Door Dash in Tennessee

The Issue

The accessibility of alcohol delivery in the state of Tennessee has increased due to services such as Uber Eats and Door Dash. While these services provide convenience, they also raise concerns about the facilitation of over service to already intoxicated individuals, underage drinking and drunk driving.  Delivery drivers are no different than any other business that serves alcohol.  While they may not be pouring it in a glass, they are serving a customer just as if the customer were to come into a store to purchase the alcohol.  The delivery driver should be held to the same accountability standards that, including but not limited to, bartenders, servers, liquor store owners and their employees are held to.  Currently, they are not required to obtain a responsible server/vender card and therefor are not bound to the same legal repercussions for over/irresponsible service.  Ignorance of the law is no excuse for over service.   According to a study by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), ease of access to alcohol has been found to increase the likelihood of alcohol abuse and related consequences, especially among youth. In addition, delivering alcohol also enables an already intoxicated person to continue consuming, putting their family members at risk for domestic violence and potentially endangering their lives.   We respectfully request a state-wide prohibition on the delivery of alcohol via platforms like Uber Eats and Door Dash to safeguard the well-being of our citizens, particularly the youth, but also the families of alcoholics. Please join us in urging Tennessee state lawmakers to take this important step. Sign the petition today.
