The Issue

This is a call from a domestic renter with a small cat. I have been diligently seeking a new home only to find it more challenging due to the additional £600 per annum charge that property owners impose due to my pet. This penalty, while seemly minor to landlords, imposes a significant financial burden on pet owners like me. According to the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, approximately 50% of UK households own a pet. This translates into a large number of people potentially affected by this additional charge. The question here goes beyond the mere presence of a pet; it's about responsible pet ownership. It is high time that we put up a united front against this unjust policy that preys on love for our pets. I urge you to sign this petition, asking relevant authorities to make it illegal for landlords to charge extra rent to tenants due to pet ownership. Let's stand together for a fair housing system that respects our right to pet ownership without extra costs. I am trying to rent a house, and if I had 4 small children, there would be no extra charges. This indicates greed to me. Children would do far more damage than a Cat. A slightly larger deposit I could understand. This would allow extra security against the animal causing damage. But charged as rent means it is non-returnable. Even if there is no damaged caused by the pet in question.
