Petition updateRemove "Progressive" Name from Gateway Baseball StadiumProgressive Responds to Our Letter

Cleveland American Indian Movement
May 17, 2016
On May 1, we addressed a letter to Progressive asking that they meet with us to discuss their core values. Today, May 17, they have refused to meet with us as they feel that our disagreement is with Cleveland Baseball and Major League Baseball.
While we recognize that the primary issue is with the baseball team, rather than directly with The Progressive Corporation, Progressive aligns itself with the baseball team and reaps benefits from the harm that the baseball team is causing. Although we recognize Progressive's lack of direct decision-making regarding the team's name and logo, as we continue to focus on Cleveland Baseball we are also expanding our focus to address the involvement of sponsors of racism.
To that end, a copy of the Progressive letter follows:

Dear Eider's Counsel: [sic]
Thank you for your letter of May 1, 2016 inviting Glenn Renwick and Progressive's Board of Directors to meet regarding the name and logo of the Cleveland Indians Baseball Club and our sponsorship of Progressive Field.
Your letter has been received and reviewed by all of the above. Specifically, it was provided to all Board members when they were present here in Cleveland for a regularly scheduled Board Meeting as well as our Annual Meeting of Shareholders on Friday, May 13th. The Board has asked me to provide you with their response now that they have had the opportunity to review and discuss your letter as a group.
While we understand your concerns, the Board believes your issue is with the Cleveland Indians Baseball Club and Major League Baseball. Progressive is under contract for the naming rights to the stadium for seven seasons beyond 2016 and no longer has any contractual right to terminate that contract. Those termination rights expired at the end of the 7th year of the naming rights contract in December 2014. Progressive also does not have any decision-making authority over the name or logo of the team.
Because we do not have the legal rights to take the actions you request, the Board does not feel meeting would be of value to either party. I would note that, to the best of my knowledge, in the approximately 45 years Progressive has been a public company with a Board of Directors, the Board has never met with an outside group.
Respectfully,
Charles E. Jarrett
Chief Legal Officer, Corporate Secretary and Vice President
The Progressive Corporation
