Profiting Off Pink

The Issue

I am doing a senior project centered around pink tax, but why?

Pink tax has been around for years, that being said what is the current progress in this matter? The main issue is that women have to pay more for products that cost the same to manufacture. According to research “women were paying more than men 42% of the time.” causing “About $1,300 more a year in extra costs.” For starters, there is progress being made, furthermore, there are only 2/50 states in the US that have made pink tax illegal. A solution to this issue is to avoid and make products without gender. “Ultimately, [these products] are pigeon-holing what femininity looks and smells like, and that comes at a price.” In stores there are plentiful options that are not focused on gender or have extra pricing, on that, color should have no gender.

In the United states we have made progress in helping this Issue, recent studies show there has been improvement to the pink tax issue, but the solutions come at a slowed rate. There are currently no federal regulations that prohibit the pink tax in place as of February 2023. In addition since 2016, the Pink Tax Repeal Act has been proposed multiple times in various incarnations, however it has never been approved. The progress on the issue at hand takes about 3 years to make a slight difference. That being said, the solution that is being used is not as effective as others could potentially be. By bringing awareness to the issue this could encourage people to speak out and fight for their rights, in addition to that, knowing there are resources to help report could encourage people to fight back.

A major issue that affects more than half the world's population is pink tax. There are not many ways to help fix this issue unless people work together. A major problem throughout working on this project is the constant idea that pink tax does not exist, or that the color pink cost more, when in fact that is far from the truth. A big part in the battle with pink tax is awareness and getting people to listen.
