Professor Facing Termination and Fighting for Academic Freedom Needs Support

Professor Facing Termination and Fighting for Academic Freedom Needs Support
The Issue
Dear Supporter,
I'm writing to update you on the case of Dr. Sang Hea Kil, a tenured professor at San Jose State University (SJSU) who has been suspended with pay for the last year due to her support for student protestors challenging the genocide in Palestine.
This summer, SJSU invoked Article 19 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the California State University and the California Faculty Association, with intent to fire Dr. Kil. Her public hearing will be held on September 18.
While under attack by SJSU, Sang has stepped up and defended other targeted faculty who were attacked for speech in their public hearing. She successfully defended Dr. Shanae Martinez at Cal Poly SLO reducing her 8 month no pay penalty to 1 month for supporting their students right to protest a genocide.
Shanae has launched a GoFundMe to help support Sang Kil’s labor in Shanae’s defense since her union, the CFA, declined to compensate Sang for her skillful and valuable defense work.
Sang Kil was cut off from summer and winter teaching because of her job suspension that she relies on to survive in the Bay Area. She needs your support. Any amount is helpful!
We will keep you posted about the progress of Sang's case, and her public hearing on the 18th. We encourage you to attend and support the battle for free speech, academic freedom, and the tenure system!
