Always & Tampax: Fully disclose the ingredients of your tampons & sanitary pads

Naturally Savvy started this petition to Bob McDonald (CEO, Procter & Gamble) and

My name is Andrea Donsky and I'm a woman, mother of two daughters, and a user of feminine hygiene products, including tampons and pads.

I was upset to learn that companies like Procter & Gamble don't have to fully disclose the ingredients of their tampons and pads because they are classified as "medical devices."

As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, three-time author, and the founder of NaturallySavvy.com (a website dedicated to educating people on living a healthy lifestyle), my goal is for companies, like P&G, to be transparent about the ingredients they're using in their feminine hygiene products as we use them in and on our bodies every single month.

Earlier this year, my team and I spent four months researchine dangers of chemicals found in feminine hygiene products, specifically tampons and pads.

I believe as women, we deserve to know what goes onto and into our bodies every single month. Full disclosure labeling will allow us to make educated choices when deciding which tampons and sanitary pads to buy.

Women will use nearly 17,000 sanitary products in their lifetime, so what they use has a real impact.

Here’s what I learned can be found in conventional feminine hygiene products:

Ø Commercial tampons & sanitary pads are bleached using chlorine dioxide. Although the process is technically “chlorine-free”, it produces dioxins as a byproduct released into the environment.

Ø Commercial tampons can contain pesticides.

Ø Tampons and pads with odor neutralizers and other artificial fragrances are nothing short of a chemical soup laced with artificial colors, polyester, adhesives, polyethylene (PET), polypropylene, and propylene glycol (PEG), contaminants linked to hormone disruption, cancer, birth defects, dryness, and infertility.

Ø Aside from the potential physiological harm caused by the unknown chemicals in commercial tampons and pads, we can't ignore the environmental impact. Ninety percent of commercial sanitary pads are made from crude oil plastic. The rest is made from chlorine-bleached wood pulp. By using plastic laden feminine hygiene products, we add the equivalent to 180 billion plastic bags to our waste stream.

We need to have full disclosure labeling on pads so, as women, we can make informed decisions when it comes to the feminine hygiene products we buy.

Join me, and the Naturally Savvy team, in putting an end to this breach of public trust by signing our petition to force Procter & Gamble to tell us what’s in their products.

Please sign our petition asking Procter & Gamble to fully disclose what’s in their tampons and sanitary pads.

UPDATE: A new report entitled "Chem Fatale" was released on November 6th detailing the chemicals found in feminine hygiene products. This further proves our point that, as consumers, we have the right to full disclosure labelling for tampons and pads. You can access the report via the link above.
