Get Warning Labels On Products Containing Benzalkonium chloride

The Issue

On Saturday 18th July 2020 I had to take my 3 month old kitten, Milo,  to the vets for suspected poisoning due to his symptoms. The vets decided he needed to be transferred to an emergency animal hospital to be monitored and have fluids via an IV. We had no clue what he could of been poisoned by as he is an indoor cat and there were no dangerous items (that we knew of) that he could get to.

After taking him to the emergency Vets we got a call to say the toxic team had said it sounded like Benzalkonium Chloride poisoning after ruling out what we thought could of been a possibility.

Benzalkonium Chloride is a organic salt most commonly found in cleaning agents such as antibacterial sprays and liquids. Being that Covid-19 is currently a worldwide pandemic cleaning agents are being used alot more frequently.

After being told his symptoms match that of Benzalkonium Chloride poisoning I decided to take a look at the antibacterial sprays I used in my home and also on his litter trays. Turns out it is in soo many common cleaning agents that we used it in pretty much every room of the house!

I phoned the Vet Hospital back and explained I had found it in many products in our house and this seems the most likely reason for his symptoms.

They have advised that Benzalkonium Chloride poisoning is alot more common than you would think yet hardly anyone knows about it and the dangers it poses to animals!

This petition is not only to raise awareness of the dangers of this chemical for animals but to encourage and hopefully make it a requirement that all cleaning chemical companies and anywhere that sells them has to put a Warning Label on saying to keep it away from pets and that it is hazardous to their health to inform people of the dangers and to help people make informed decisions on the products they use in their home around their pets.

Please help make this happen by signing the petition and raising awareness by sharing the petition amongst friends.
