Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) Asia Pacific in New Delhi released the following data on the eve of World Environment Day. The data was compiled based on the plastic waste collected from 15 Indian cities and highlighted the branded plastic pollution plaguing our country.
Most of the plastic waste is from FMCG companies which package their food/beverage products in the plastic which is cheap and mostly worthless for the end-user. Do you know that 90% of the plastic waste that is generated today is non-recyclable? The report stresses on making companies responsible for their waste as part of Extended Producer's Responsibility or EPR. Currently the entire burden of waste management falls on the consumer and the municipality. And that is not fair. Cheap plastic is not worth the headache for the consumer or the recycler. Why won't we prefer slightly expensive but sturdier, multiuse packaging that would also have some returnable value for the customer?
Among the Multinational companies, PepsiCo tops the chart with plastic waste produced by its bottled soft drinks and packaged snacks.
Among the local companies. Parle is the largest producer of plastic waste. Among, other products such as biscuits, candies and other snacks, Parle also happens to be the producer of packaged drinking water under the brand name of Bisleri.
We dont know when EPR laws will kick in, making corporations responsible for the waste they are creating so casually. Till then, we are better off avoiding single use plastic as much as we can.
