Induct Jerry Smith (#87) Washington Football Team into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
Please accept my letter / petition signature as a formal nomination for Jerry Smith into the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame Senior class posthumously.
Jerry Smith played for the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders), wearing jersey #87 from 1965-1977. His accomplishments and contributions on the field stood for themselves. Jerry held the record for the most touchdowns by a tight end (60) in the NFL during that era. His record still stands today with the Washington Commanders.
His record also exceeded John Macke (38), Jackie Smith (40), and Mike Ditka (44), a record held until November 6, 2003 when it was broken by Shannon Sharpe. Macke, Jackie Smith, Ditka and Sharpe are all inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Jerry’s leadership on and off the field was one that spoke for itself. Jerry conducted himself with dignity and compassion by giving back to youth organizations, our communities and our veterans, all the while struggling with his identity acceptance off the field. It is Jerry’s time.
