Daniel Devitt started this petition to Priti Patel MP (Home Secretary) and

No baby should die in prison.

Last week at HMP Bronzefield, a privatised prison run by Sodexo, a woman was apparently left alone throughout labour and delivered a baby without any form of medical care or support.

The baby died.

The UK in 2019 must be better than this.  Surely we are better than this?

I work in the NHS and have specialised in works connected to Child Death, and supporting those affected by the death of a child. I am an expert on the statutory processes around the death of children and the support needed by the bereaved.

More importantly I know that whenever a baby or a child dies, we must do all we can to find out why, so we can stop, wherever possible, further deaths.

We need to know what happened and how we stop it happening again.

That’s why I’m calling for a full public inquiry into the death of this baby, and the failure of Sodexo and the Home Office to provide the basic maternity and medical care that could have prevented this from happening.

A police investigation is underway - but this will probably only focus on if the baby died through actions from staff or prisoners or the mother herself. It will not deal with the systemic issues that lead to a baby dying in a prison.

We can’t let them get away with this. We need a proper inquiry to look into the possibility of corporate manslaughter and the policies that led to the death of this baby. Women in prison have rights. The babies of women have rights. We are a civilised country.... aren't we?

Babies must not die in prison. Ever.

We will never stop horrific deaths like this happening without a full public inquiry - and those responsible for this death must be held to account.

If the inquiry finds grounds for prosecution then this must be pursued with the full force of the law. Until there is an inquiry there will be no chance of this happening.

This is the UK.  It's 2019. We are better than this.  Join me in saying: No woman should give birth alone in a prison cell and no baby should ever die in prison again.
