Prioritize safety at Golden Point Reservoir

Prioritize safety at Golden Point Reservoir
The issue
Every day, we locals of the Mount Alexander Shire drive past the beautiful Golden Point Reservoir. It's a route that many of us rely on for daily commutes. However, over the years, it's become increasingly difficult – and dangerous – due to ongoing issues with parking and reckless driving, and using the roadway as a walkway or playspace.
Especially in the summer months, an influx of visitors to the area often leads to cars parked illegally in 'no standing' zones. This reckless parking often reduces the two-lane road to a precarious single lane, creating a bottleneck that not only affects the residents but also endangers everyone using the road. It is unacceptable for a drive that should be pleasant and safe to transform into a hazard because of a lack of enforcement of basic traffic rules.
Illegal driving behaviors continue to undermine the safety and harmony of our community. With cars parked improperly, turning over double lines on blind corners and drivers ignoring the safety regulations, the risk of accidents and injuries increases dramatically.
The Mount Alexander Shire Council needs to step in and prioritize the safety of its residents and visitors. We are urging the Council to implement efficient and lasting solutions to enforce parking regulations and manage traffic more effectively. This includes installing further clear signage, placing timber bollards in 'no standing' areas, increasing patrols in problematic areas, and imposing strict penalties for illegal parking and driving.
Furthermore, creating designated parking areas that are away from the main traffic flow would help alleviate some of the congestion problems without limiting access to the Reservoir's beauty and recreational facilities, however, in reality this solution is not even a possibility until at least after the Summer of 2027, if at all.
Our community's safety must be a priority, and the current situation demands immediate action. With your support and signatures, we can push the Council to implement these necessary changes. Please sign this petition and help us make Golden Point Reservoir a safer place for everyone.
