The Issue

My best friend, Devin Prouty, has been missing from Goldendale, Washington since December 8, 2020. Devin's disappearance has left a void not just in my life, but also in our community. I know in my heart that someone knows something, yet the search for Devin seems to have been hampered by stigma and indifference. We must ensure that every missing person, like Devin, is treated with the urgency and respect they deserve, regardless of their personal history.

Far too often, cases like Devin's are sidestepped or given less attention when authorities learn that the individual may have struggled with substance use. This dismissal not only stalls vital investigations but also sends a dangerous message: that some lives are considered less valuable. Our local authorities must be equipped and compelled to pursue thorough investigations and utilize specialized equipment necessary to uncover the truth, even if difficult truths lie hidden.

Washington State needs to lead the charge by implementing policies that mandate equal priority for all missing persons cases, irrespective of their backgrounds. By removing this bias, we not only increase the chances of bringing people like Devin home but also affirm the value and dignity of every individual in our community. Society must stand against the stigma that hinders justice and ensure that no stone remains unturned in the search for our loved ones.

We are asking for systemic change that prioritizes missing persons cases without prejudice. Our demand is simple: prioritize people, not past mistakes. I urge you to sign this petition to make sure Devin's story, and the stories of many others, remind us of our shared responsibility. Let’s hold the system accountable and make it clear that every person matters. In signing, you stand not just for Devin, but for a more just and compassionate system in Washington State.
