Prioritize Flood Prevention Funding for Pike County

Prioritize Flood Prevention Funding for Pike County
The Issue
My daughters and grandbabies live in Pike County, and every day I worry about their safety due to the constant threat of flooding. This concern isn't just mine; it's shared by countless residents and families who call Pike County home. For the sake of our loved ones, it is vital that the state takes action to prevent future tragedies.
Pike County, Kentucky, has a history of recurring floods that have displaced families, damaged infrastructure, and endangered lives. According to the National Weather Service, Kentucky has experienced a significant increase in flood events over the past decade, with Pike County being one of the most affected areas. The lack of adequate flood prevention measures is an issue that needs immediate attention.
While natural disasters can't always be predicted, their impact can certainly be mitigated through careful planning and resource allocation. Flood prevention is not just about building barriers but also involves comprehensive community planning and timely response strategies. Currently, Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) has the power to make meaningful change by allocating more resources towards flood prevention initiatives specifically for Pike County.
According to Kentucky's state budget reports, less than 1% of the disaster management funds are currently allocated to flood prevention. This is concerning, given that flooding is one of the most frequent natural disasters affecting the area.
We propose that KYEM increase the flood prevention budget for Pike County by at least 20%, focusing on infrastructure improvements such as levees and drainage systems, community education programs for flood preparedness, and enhanced emergency response capabilities.
Our goal is to secure the safety and well-being of every resident in Pike County. By supporting increased flood prevention funding, we can reduce the risk of future disasters and protect our families and communities.
Please join me in urging Kentucky Emergency Management to prioritize Pike County in their flood prevention funding plans. Your signature can help make Pike County a safer place for my loved ones and everyone who resides there.
