Prioritize Children's Safety: Rethink the Road Layout of the Founders Walk Project

The Issue

As a mother of five, and proud member of Milford Junior Major League, it pains me to see the potential danger that the new road layout in the Founders Walk Project could pose- not just to my own children who frequent the playground and Junior Major League baseball field, but also to the countless families who use these grounds regularly during town events such as the Oyster Festival and countless practices that take place under the pavilion. The current proposal straightens the road through the playground and Benard Field, creating significant safety risks, for children playing there during the numerous baseball games and tournaments held each season. Additionally, the area sees heavy pedestrian traffic between the basketball and tennis courts, further increasing the likelihood of road-related accidents.

According to the World Health Organization, over 270,000 pedestrians lose their lives on roads each year, equating to an average of 22,000 deaths per month globally. This alarming statistic underscores the very real danger of placing a roadway in a child-saturated, high traffic area [Source: World Health Organization, Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018].

We urge the authorities to reconsider the road layout for the Founders Walk Project. A safer alternative, such as redirecting the roadway around the perimeter of these recreational spaces would preserve the area as a safe, enjoyable place for families and children.
