The Issue

We, the students of Sarah E Goode, have a say in what we want in our school too. The school upholds unjust policies. The uniform policy here at Goode. It enforces the rule to have students wear only khakis, black pants, red/white/grey collared shirts. This policy restricts the students cultural, traditional and the freedom to express themselves through clothing. Students in Goode are not elementary students where they need to have a dress code to keep everything the same, we are growing young adults. High school is supposed to prepare students for their future and college. Uniforms are not necessary for students because it has nothing to do with education, take colleges for example. There are no uniforms for college students to attend their classes. Why should Sarah E. Good have a uniform policy as it only restricts the students to dress according to their culture/tradition or how they feel. When students do not abide by this rule, students are taken to the (dean) office to call their parents and force students to have whatever the student’s attire changed to the uniform. Doing so is oppression on students because they physically use their power as staff/security/principal/teacher(adults) to make students(children).  We are not literally dying, but the uniform is suffocating me to death. Not being able to express myself and dress how I feel, restricts us. The bland Sarah E. Goode uniform policy is killing the students' spirits just to come to school and learn! Teachers, principals, and staff all say that they want to make their school enjoyable, a learning environment for students, and a place where they can have fun and feel that they can come to school with ease and learn something new everyday. Forcing students to abide by the uniform policy of Goode just makes them not want to come to school. Enforcing such a simple rule of clothing just kills the idea of “school is fun. School is a place where students can be themselves. A place where creative ideas and innovative learning take place.  If teachers/principals and staff really wanted to make school a place more enjoyable and open space for students to open their minds to education. Focusing solely on students’ attire and going out the schools’ way to punish the lawbreakers, gives a negative effect on students who want to be here, but couldn’t just because of a dress code that has to do nothing with education.
