Support for Heather Janiak, Identity and Agency History Teacher

The Issue

Hello,

Our names are Sia Patel and Katie Wright, we are students at Point Loma High School. We hope all is well given the circumstances, but we have a serious concern to bring to your attention. Our Identity and Agency History teacher, Heather Janiak, may lose her job simply because another teacher with higher seniority needs a place to fill in. We both have gained so much from our short 9 weeks with Mrs. Janiak, and we are eternally grateful to have had her. That’s why we need your help to make sure she is still there for the rest of the year and her abundant career.

No teacher deserves to lose their job or livelihood. Even so, it is unfair for a Physical Education teacher, with a history credential, to take the position away from a teacher who has devoted herself to bettering her students’ education. We should never have to sacrifice our education for an undisclosed rule. All students are required to learn about US history, however, our textbooks are reluctant to mention the full truth of our dark past. One which explores the discrimination and oppression minorities have faced throughout history. Even before Identity and Agency was her official class, Mrs. Janiak spent over a decade trying to create a course where students can explore different stories throughout American history.

Despite the countless challenges students have faced with distance learning, her passion and love for her job showed right through, and was able to reach and inspire students to learn. As you can see, her course is like none other, she pours her heart into her own research and is dedicated to teaching others. We believe this replacement would be unfair as it would take over someone with such commitment. If you or someone you know is willing to help us make this change, we would appreciate you signing our petition. We need to encourage Principal Lowry, Rep. Michael McQuary, and Superintendent Cindy Marten to make a more clearly defined solution, in which neither students nor teachers are at determinant.

-Sincerely two concerned students
