SCMEGLEV Project a Disaster for Prince George’s County
SCMEGLEV Project a Disaster for Prince George’s County
The Issue
The SC MEGLEV Project will have a devastating effect on Prince George's County residents and the environment. Our county continues to be exploited as a dumping ground for industrial hazards and locally unwanted land uses and as a sacrifice zone. Eighty Seven percent of the minority population and 8.9 percent of the low wealth population will be impacted in Prince George’s County.
The proposed 200-acre train yard, for train maintenance, would be placed in the last large ecologically intact green space left in the region, the Patuxent Wildlife Research Refuge and the USDA Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC). It is proposed that the BARC relinquish approximately 187 acres and the demolition of 22 buildings. It is also proposed that the National Wildlife Refuge, the only one in the country dedicated to support wildlife research would have to sacrifice as much as 24 acres to this project. In addition, NASA and the U.S Secret Service would have acreage taken away.
And, we still don't know of the long term negative impacts of the construction and storage of hazardous materials, and the electromagnetic radiation from the high speed rail.
Let's fight for the preservation of the environment and the health and safety of all.
Stop this train!
