Meet Benson.....The face of slaughter!!!!, The face of helplessness, the face of lost hope!!!! This is a petition of many faces.Sweet Benson.. not to long ago this foal was separated from its mother as the mother was loaded and shipped to slaughter. Soon after mom and baby were torn apart, and the newly born foal passed from lack of his mothers care or a compassionate human being to help the foal in need of loving care. Also many foals are born in feedlots or their final destination in Mexico or Canada after being unloaded off the truck at the last leg of their journey through the slaughter pipeline. Unloaded off the truck at the slaughterhouse into a holding area as pregnant mares that were shipped for slaughter give birth to their baby who sadly now dies or is sent overseas to Japan to be eaten as Sushi etc....Pregnant mares, mothers that just gave birth in a feedlot, or any other mare bred for whatever purposes and is in a feedlot awaiting to ship for slaughter should not be allowed to ship. No horse should ship to slaughter for that matter. Sad to say this happens all to often and so many foals are left to die, but happy to say thank you to rescue groups that come in and rescue these foals by the dozens give them the care they need and find loving forever homes for the babies that were once removed from their mothers. But as much as this continues to happen the endless amount of unwanted foals rescues can only take on so many. This is caused from backyard breeding and irresponsible horse ownership etc., and according to statistics 63% of equine rescues are at their capacity and 38% of equine rescues are turning horses away that are being brought to them.

The scenarios that leave horses unwanted can be different,  but all too often lead to the same fate: slaughter. When it comes to ownership in the horse world, supply exceeds demand. For slaughterhouses, this reality is not a problem; it’s an economic opportunity.Out west, where the wild horses can only have so much freedom, the BLM manages carrying capacities by rounding up mustangs and removing them from their native ranges. Some of these horses are adopted. The rest live out their days in holding corrals where basic feeding and watering costs the BLM half of their annual budget, approximately $43 million a year. , “More mustangs are estimated to live in government pens than in the wild.”, and sadly wild mustangs are sent to slaughter. So with all the unwanted horses from foals to adult and older horses, we are left with one question... what do we do with all the unwanted horses?

On the legislative battleground, some have argued that slaughterhouses are practical solutions for getting rid of unwanted horses while others believe they are inhumane and cruel. Slaughter stopped in 2007 when Congress voted to withhold USDA inspection funds, effectively closing down all horse slaughter facilities in the United States.

Horse welfare advocates such as myself,  have been following the slaughterhouse stories for many years, and the transportation of American horses both domestic and wild Mustangs while following investigative journalism and traveling to auctions and feedlots around the United States. The anti-slaughter argument comes with many different faces. I feel the best way to fight  horse slaughter the rounding up of wild mustangs, PZP testing, foals separated from their mother at birth or a few days old ( nurse mare foals),endless backyard breeding from, pregnant mares and new mothers on feedlots as baby and mother are separated as mom ships to slaughter, shipping and transportation down the slaughter pipeline with frightened horses that die along the way as they are trampled, bitten etc. as they all are crammed into a semi truck like sardines mares, geldings, stallions, the crippled, the blind, the terrified, and what is left of them prior to their slaughter, loaded onto trailers beyond carrying capacities, transported longer than average distances, and go with no food or water and sadly killed very cruelly and inhumanely., with all this I feel that we as Americans and a nation of compassionate human beings need to end this ongoing nightmare. We do not kill our horses nor do we eat them.  We need to find an alternative to slaughter and an alternative to the helpless foals that are so in need of their mothers and a chance at life. Please stand up and be a voice for the voiceless and be an Angel 4 the horses and their foals. They are counting on us, as we have counted on them for our transportation many many years ago, so lets find an alternative, slaughter is not a viable alternative.. Life is...
