Dear PM Lee,

APPEAL TO INCLUDE SME WORKING DIRECTORS  IN THE JOBS SUPPORT SCHEME (JSS)

As the heads of SMEs, working directors are the first to feel the painful economic effects of the COVID-19, especially during these unprecedented times.

Alas, while the Government has rolled out the Resilience and Solidarity Budgets to help protect livelihoods of the citizens and to save jobs, we, the working directors, have been unfortunately excluded.

In the latest Budget, employees receive 75% wage support for the month of April, and 25% -75% for the next 8 months. The Budget has also revised the criteria for the self-employed as the Government is aware that many of their contracts have been cancelled.

None of this unfortunately extends to working directors.

Sir, SME business owners face a unique set of challenges. As working directors, the nature of our job requires us to look after the needs of firstly the business and our staff, followed by ourselves. We’ve built our businesses from scratch and spent time nurturing the growth. SMEs often have limited resources, and to achieve what we have today, many of us have had to make many personal sacrifices.

As the pandemic explodes, it is clear that it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep businesses running.

The reality is that working directors also have personal responsibilities and bills to pay. If we do not receive the support for ourselves in time, it will be difficult for us to protect our own livelihood. If we cannot support ourselves, it will be hard for us to keep the business going.

As DPM Heng Swee Keat has said, in these extraordinary times, “We need to keep the spirit of enterprise alive.”

We want to keep the spirit of enterprise alive. To help us do so, we ask that you grant us the same wage support as employees in the Job Support Scheme (JSS).

(p.s. we are not seeking donations from members of the public so any donation via this petition doesn’t go to us)
