The rare Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta, Penyu Tempayan) was rescued by Penang's inshore fishermen! It was found in the sea near the site of the proposed Penang South Reclamation.
Around 2pm on Saturday 7 September, our nelayan pantai found the turtle about 500m from Pulau Kendi. It was caught in a discarded pukat tunda net and was struggling to free itself.
The fishermen cut away the net and released it, but it was floating adrift, too weak to swim, so the fishermen brought it to shore. En Roslizan, Ketua Nelayan Teluk Kumbar, called the Fisheries Department, who instructed that the turtle should be put it in a tank with sea water.
Fisheries arrived a couple of hours later to take it away. Hope our dear turtle will survive and recover from the trauma.
This creature made its way to in Laut Selatan Pulau Pinang, where the proposed 3 island reclamation will snuff out marine life if it proceeds. Please save our turtles! Sign the petition...
