Stop Destruction of Eco-Sensitive areas in Goa

The Issue

Dear Mr Prime Minister,

Agriculture The sight of agricultural lands being destroyed for commercial purposes and construction of concrete structures on land angers any true Goan. One of the other major reasons affecting agriculture in Goa .

Forest About one-third of the total land in Goa falls under forest areas and yields substantial profits the pace of degradation has almost doubled due to short-term planning, public indifference, industrialization and rampant urbanization. human interference leading to the rapid degradation of flora and fauna in the state.

Land there are growing concerns about the degrading environment, deviant behavior in coastal areas and rocketing estate prices. In Goa  land is victim to lop sided development strategy adopted by the state government which is destroying the natural beauty and eco-systems of this serene state this unsustainable development is haphazard and unplanned development by the government of the state

Coastal areas The coastal plains are used to grow rice which is the staple food of Goa. There was a time when Goa was self sufficient in supply of food grains for the people of the state however now, due to haphazard and unplanned development by this government   the Goan economy is strained further with the costs of food grain imports.

Goa beaches facing pollution Tar balls have left large stretches of frequented sandy beaches in Bardez, Pernem and Salcete talukas heavily polluted.  A long 15-km span of Salcete's coastline, from Benaulim to Velsao, another nearly 6-km stretch from Sinquerim to Baga in Bardez, and parts of the Pernem coastline in Arambol have been worst affected by the deposition. A few beaches, especially Vagator and Miramar in the north and Khariawada and Cavelossim in the south have also turned ugly with the blotches of weathered oily material known to be dumped by passing ships in high seas. It is becoming increasingly a large-scale problem due to irresponsible dumping of oil at sea and this year miles and miles of the state's coastline has been dirtied by tar balls. Long stretches of beaches in Salcete and Bardez are among the worst impacted. In Cavelossim, the dark streaks of oil lasted for over four days. Tidal action swept the muck, while local beach-cleaning systems proved inadequate to clean up the mess.  "The tar balls were as much as four inches thick and the scene on the beach looked bad," said Cruz Cardozo, a local shack operator. The tar balls create a huge problem for not only tourists and locals but also for the environment, as nesting of turtles and spawning of fish is affected Tar balls are formed after an oil slick at sea caused by dumping of oil by ships at sea. Some of the tar balls may be as large as 30cm in diameter, but most are coin-sized or a bit bigger. Driven by winds, waves and currents, they float and spread out on the shore much to everybody's horror during the May-October period.

Your BJP Govt in Goa now is planning to destroy the Eco-sensitive areas in the state which is clearly a architectural plan drawn by Chief Minister Parsekar & his cabinet by passing an ordinance in a hurry to get project like Eco-Tourism in Eco-Sensitive areas . We don't even have Eco- Tourism policy in place

We the citizens of Goa urge to kindly interfere in this matter on utmost priority
