Time to Zoom Out China's Digital Hegemony
The Issue
In a shocking show of utter disrespect to human rights, internet freedom and digital democracy, the popular video platform Zoom shut down the account of Zhuo Fengsuo a US-based Chinese activist and a former student leader of Tiananmen Square Protests. The reason, he organized an online meeting to commemorate the 31st anniversary of Tiananmen protests on 04th June 2020. This absolutely clear that Zoom Technologies a China-based company resorted to this undemocratic act under the pressure of the Chinese Communist Party that rules China with iron hand.
It's unfortunate that Zoom resorts to such violation of individual rights while enjoying the protection and progress worldwide, thanks to the WTO agreements and liberal digital policies in many countries. This is despite the fact, intelligence agencies in many countries have been warning about the potential data security threat that Zoom and other platforms of China origin are causing. In fact, the Ministry of Home Affairs of Government of India has issued a warning in late April that, Zoom App may not be safe for use. Earlier, the same Ministry had warned similarly about Tik Tok, another App from China.
With such looming insecurity and proven violation of digital democratic rights, it's difficult to understand why the Government allows to Zoom and other Chinese Apps to be used and operate in India. While the responsible Governments worldwide are doing nothing to check the locust of invasive apps from China, the Government of China is doing everything possible to arm-twist the global tech giants like Google, Apple, etc., to stifle the independent voices worldwide. Amazingly, while not letting Google and Apple operate in its own soil, China is able to force these tech giants to remove an App developed by Indian software Innovators as it helped over fifty million users to easily get rid of China Apps.
Time to "Zoom Out": Let's unite to stop the fascist country, China from exploiting liberal democracies to achieve it's intrusive and expansionist agenda through kleptocracy, digital hegemony, undeclared bio-wars, Military threat and fiscal arm twisting!. Let's start this progressive backlash with this simple step.
Here goes the request the Government of India to lead the battle against digital hegemony and digital intrusion of China with effective policy and regulatory actions and International cooperation, with an immediate ban on Zoom video conferencing and Tik Tok Apps.
