गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुरेव परंब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
In a culture and society where the teachers are considered as the Param Brahma and considered stepping stone of the future generation’s ideas and well-being, almost 25000 contractual elemantary teachers in Assam is facing apathy of the Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission, Assam. We were selected through a merit based examination (TET) and given appointment as contractual teachers for a period of 5 years initially in 2012 under the purview of RTE Act 2009 for imparting quality elemantary education. Many of us had that ability to join other vocations but all of us thought we would be absorbed as a permanent teacher after these 5 long years and continued to impart educations to the students taking this profession as noble way to shape the future generation. It is also prudent to mention that these teachers have got the professional degree in teaching i.e. DEI Ed/B. Ed etc. and have already acquired 5 years of work experience. However, like a bolt from the blue, Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission, Assam has made an arbitrary decision and directed us to sign an agreement extend our services to only for 11 months. This has created a sense of insecurities among the teachers and an insult to the dedication of these teachers and since many of us are the sole bread earner of our families, our families are also suffering mentally. Among us those who are parents are now started worrying about their children’s future.
We request the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Honorable Minister of Human Resource Development, Honorable Chief Minister of Assam and Honorable Education Minister of Assam to think about these 25000 teachers and their family and instruct the concerned department to make these teachers permanent in the long run and to take immediate steps to increase the contract period to 5 years with 7th Pay Commission benifits instead of 11 months as interim relief.
