 we want a national rivers policy. The parliament should unanimously adopt a national rivers policy spelling out challenges and solutions. This should clearly state the national long term vision for the rivers, which presently are in a sad state, due to pollution and increasing encroachments, as also shrinkage of flood plains. We want the union government to clearly define the rights of the rivers, which the court has recognised as living entities. Indian rivers are not just water bodies, but are heritage assets, having sustained culture, faith, values and literature. Along banks of rivers stand valuable historical monuments like the Taj Mahal. Clearly if rivers are reduced to sewage canals, and face crisis of survival, our own identity and existence would also be at stake.

we also demand constitution of a statutory body, the central rivers authority, to implement the proposed national rivers authority.
