Prisoners for Profit: The Truth Behind That Doggy In The Window
The Issue
“Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
― Milan Kundera
Our initiative is to amend section 445.1of the animal cruelty criminal code so that it includes the breeding of dogs for the sole purpose of resale to be defined as animal cruelty, unless the offender has an authorized license. Separately, we are appealing to the agriculture minister Gerry Ritz, to liscense dog breeding facilities and to monitor the operation of such facilities in accordance with regulations to be defined by the minister's offie. This would be an expansion of the licensing and monitoring of other livestock and game activities that is under the minister's portfolio today.
The Canadian Kennel Club Policy Statement – Definition of a Puppy Mill
"The term “Puppy Mill” generally refers to a high-volume, sub-standard dog-breeding operation, which sells purebred or mixed breed dogs, directly or indirectly to unsuspecting buyers. Some of the characteristics common to puppy mills are:
(a) Sub-standard health and/or environmental issues;
(b) Sub-standard animal care, treatment and/or socialization;
(c) Sub-standard breeding practices which lead to genetic defects or hereditary disorders;
(d) Erroneous or falsified certificates of registration, pedigrees and/or genetic background.
They sell primarily to retail pet shops (usually via a broker), but occasionally sell directly to individual consumers. Dogs are bred solely for profit, with no concern for their physical health or psychological well-being - most are disease-ridden; all are force-bred continuously. They often use "Kennels" or "Farms" in its business name. Dogs' and puppies' are usually in squalid living conditions and are off-limits to the public.
800,000 is the number of adult breeding dogs suffering in puppy mills. Sadly, 1 million puppy mill dogs end up euthanized in shelters every year. Female dogs are bred at every opportunity with little to no recovery time between litters. When, after a few years, they are physically depleted to the point that they no longer can reproduce, breeding females are often killed. In puppy mills, dogs can spend most of their lives in cramped cages, with no room to play or exercise. Often times, the water and food provided for the puppies is contaminated, crawling with bugs and they are the puppies can even be malnourished.
By signing this petition, you are helping in a making a huge step in altering many innocent lives for dogs. Dogs deserve to be treated humanely and given a chance at a happy and healthy life.
