The Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who in April suggested Brazil may open a protected reserve in the Amazon to mining, is coming to India as the chief guest at the 71st Republic Celebration in 2020. As a mark of his strong intent to industrialize and exploit the Amazon, he said: “You won’t get any trouble from the Environment Ministry, nor the Mines and Energy Ministry nor any other.”

His policies pose a great threat to the survival of indigenous species and the ecological balance of the region. Official data suggests that Amazon has faced increased deforestation since he got elected as the President. It is estimated to be a 30 per cent increase from the previous year and the highest net loss since 2008.

Amazon is considered by scientists to be the World's lungs, and its destruction will add to the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere. At a time when climate change threatens the very existence of humanity on Earth, Bolsonaro's approach on the Amazon will only help in making the situation worse. We in India, who are part of the Global South are even more vulnerable with a fragile ecosystem and a coastline of 7,516 Kms.

Inviting a person with such environmentally exploitative approach to the Republic day celebrations when we as Indians celebrate the day our constitution came into being is apalling. Article 51-A (g), of our constitution says that “It shall be duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wild life and to have compassion for living creatures.”

Hence we as citizens of India strongly object to the presence of President Jair Bolsonaro at the Republic Day Celebration and request that Hon. Prime Minister revoke the invitation and uphold the spirit of Indian Democracy.
