Dear Petitioners, As you know from the last update, this petition was successfully tabled in Parliament on 11 February 2016. The Petitions Office has informed me that the petition has been sent to the Immigration Minister Mr Dutton for a response. Now is the time to contact your local Member of Parliament and ask them to lobby on behalf of Behnam Satah, and ask that he be urgently brought to Australia. His health is constantly deteriorating and the threats to his life are ever present. Australia is responsible for his welfare. He never chose to go to Papua New Guinea and has said he has experienced his time on Manus Island as a form of kidnapping. He is a witness to the murder of Reza Barati and has been repeatedly threatened for testifying in the trial. On 17 February we marked two years since Reza was killed on Manus Island. Australia is responsible for the health and safety of those it has detained in offshore detention, and will eventually have to pay the price for the suffering it has inflicted on these people. This view has also recently been expressed by Comcare, and there is an ABC radio documentary discussing Australia's responsibility. "The Australian Lawyers Alliance believes that the government could potentially expose the department and its employees to substantial fines and even imprisonment if it fails in its duty of care to detainees. The lawyers argue that the Federal Public sector health and safety regulator must act over conditions in offshore detention." Please contact your local Member of Parliament and ask him or her to lobby Mr Dutton to bring Behnam urgently to Australia. There is no advantage in waiting for things to get even worse.
