From the older generation of Australians: end offshore detention now

Dear Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull,

We are an older generation of Australians. We are the generation that did not go off to war; we watched the war on the News Reels that played before the matinee movie. We read the newspapers and saw the photos of the millions of refugees, fleeing the horrific persecution of Nazism, Fascism and the privation of war.

We were not old enough to fight ourselves but we were old enough to bear witness to the suffering and we were old enough to promise ourselves and each other that we would never forget and we would never remain silent in the face of such suffering.

We are writing to you because we need to be true to that promise. Australia’s treatment of refugees on Manus Island, Nauru and even the on-shore detention camps is not acceptable. These policies are perpetuating the suffering of these children, women and men who have fled persecution and danger in the hope of a safer life.

You have read the reports, the Senate Inquiry, the Moss Review, the Amnesty report and the more recently the over 2000 Nauru files. You know as well as we do that these camps are not safe, they are no place to keep these innocent and suffering families.

You know this.

As a generation that has seen first hand the horror of a world war, the misery inflicted on millions as they fled persecution, and as a generation that remembers with pride, the role Australia played in the creation of the UN Refugee Convention, we ask you to change this policy.

It is not effective, it is not kind and it is not in the interests of any Australian to be in contravention of our international legal obligations.

Declare an amnesty and bring those children, women and men on Nauru and Manus Island to Australia. Create a regional solution and rejoin the international community to build a resilient region and get on with the business of peace building.

We are Australians and we are proud of what we have been. We ask you to act so we can also be proud of what we are becoming.

For those detained in offshore detention,

Jim Macken
