Water pollution, air pollution and terrible health

Plastic bags pose a grave threat to the people and environments of Ethiopia. Plastic bags are only in use for a few moments, yet take hundreds of years to decompose, leaching toxic chemicals into our water and soil. This affects our food systems and human health. It also pollutes our rivers and lakes, clogging drainage systems and killing our livestock and animals.

Ethiopia's plastic consumption has been steadily increasing over the years with a staggering 50% of all plastic being discarded improperly. Ethiopia does not recycle plastic, but the open dump sites are not equipped for the safe disposal of waste. If they don't end up in an open dump or in nature, they are being burned. Burning plastic releases toxic chemicals into the air, causing harmful effects on our health, such as asthma, emphysema and various cancers. 

Let us demand the end of the use, manufacture and importation plastic bags in Ethiopia! 

Kenyan James Wakibia, like many of us, was angered by constantly seeing littered plastic bags in his town of Nakuru, but unlike many of us, he decided to act. James, a student and photographer, began a green revolution that led to Kenya’s plastic bag ban through the Twitter campaign #banplasticsKE in 2015. Young people have the capacity to effect change.

As The Addis Ababa Global Shapers Hub, we are determined to play our part in a global effort to reimagine our current and unsustainable use of plastics. Please join us by encouraging our government to join our East Africa neighbours, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya in ending plastic use in our country by signing this petition.

Economic sense

Ethiopia is the second largest importer in the region of raw materials for the production of plastic. Banning plastic bags would promote local businesses to fill the gap using zembil/ basket bags, cloth, jute, strong paper bags and vegetable starch bags. Although Ethiopia has a ban on plastic bags with a thickness of under 0.33mm, this ban is not being enforced, nor would it be enough on its own. 

Rwanda, Kenya, France, Italy and many large cities from USA, Australia and UK banned the single use plastic bags with impressive results. Countries like South Africa, Belgium, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Finland, Luxembourg and The Netherlands, have opted for a plastic bag tax instead, but banning plastic bags altogether remains the key solution and we won't accept anything less!

የውሃ ብክለት፣ የአየር ብክለት እና የጤና ችግሮች

ፌስታል በኢትዮጵያ እና በአካባቢው ህዝብ ላይ ከባድ ስጋት ይፈጥራል። ወንዞችንና ሀይቆችን ያበላሻሉ እና እንስሳቶች ይገድላሉ። ፌስታል በመጥፎ ንድፍ የተሰሩ ናቸው - ለጥቂት ደቂቃዎች ብቻ ጥቅም ላይ ውሎ ከመቶ አመታት በላይ በአካባቢያችን ውስጥ ይቆያል። ኢትዮጵያ ፕላስቲክን መልሶ ጥቅም ላይ አያውልም። ነገር ግን ክፍት የቆሻሻ ማጠራቀሚያዎች ቆሻሻን በስነስራት ማስወገድ የተዘጋጁ አይደሉም። ስለዚህ የፕላስቲክ ቅሪት ወደ ውሃው እና አፈር ውስጥ ሊከሰት ይችላል።

በኢትዮጵያ የፕላስቲክ ፍጆታ ባለፉት አመታት በከፍተኛ ፍጥነት እየጨመረ ነው። ከ50% በላይ ደግሞ በስነስረዓት አይጣልም። በደረቅ ቆሻሻ ማጠራቀሚያ ቦታ ወይም በአከባቢው የማይገኙ ከሆነ የፕላስቲክ ቆሻሻዎች ይቃጠላሉ። የተቃጠለ ፕላስቲክ መርዛማ ኬሚካሎች በአየር ውስጥ እንዲለቀቅ ያደርጋል። ይህ እንደ አስም፣ ኤምፊዚማ እና የተለያዩ የካንሰር ዓይነቶች ያስከትላል።

በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ የፌስታል ጥቅም፣ ምርት እና ማስመጣት እናቁም!

ኬንያዊ ጄምስ ዋኪቢያ ከናኩሩ ከተማ ብዙ ፌስታል መንገድ ላይ በማየቱ በጣም ተናዶ ነበር። ነገር ግን ከብዙዎቻችን በተቃራኒ እርምጃ ለመውሰድ ወሰነ። ጄምስ ተማሪና ፎቶግራፍ አንሺ በ2015 የኬንያ አረንጓዴ ለውጥ አስነሳ። በትዊተርም #banplasticsKE በመጠቀም ፌስታልም ማስከልከል ቻለ። ወጣት ለውጥ የማምጣት አቅም አላቸው!

የአዲስ አበባ Global Shapers Hub እንደመሆንዎ አሁን ያለውን እና ዘላቂነት የሌለውን የፕላስቲክ አጠቃቀምን እንደገና ለማሰብ የእኛን ድርሻ ለመጫወት ቆርጠን ተነስተናል። እባክዎ ይህንን በመፈረም መንግስት እነሩዋንዳ፣ ታንዛኒያ እና ኬንያን ተከትሎ በሀገራችን ውስጥ የፕላስቲክ አጠቃቀምን ለማደስ በማበረታታት ይደመሩ።

ኢኮኖሚክስ

በምስራቅ እና መካከለኛው አፍሪካ ውስጥ የፕላስቲክ ምርት ለማምረት ኢትዮጵያ ሁለተኛውን ደረጃ ትይዛለች። ፌስታል መገደብ የአካባቢውን የንግድ ሥራ ያጠናክራል - ጨርቅ፣ ጠንካራ የወረቀት ከረጢቶች እና ከአትክልት የሚሰሩት ቦርሳዎችን በመጠቀም ክፍተቱን ለመሙላት ያስችላል። ኢትዮጵያ ከ 0.33 ሚ.ሜትር ውፍረት በታች ፌስታሎች የሚከለክል ህግ ቢኖርም እገዳው ተፈፃሚነት የለውም። በራሱ ብቻም በቂም አይደለም።

ሩዋንዳ፣ ኬንያ፣ ፈረንሳይ፣ ጣሊያን እና ብዙ ትልልቅ ከተሞች ከአሜሪካ፣ አውስትራሊያ እና ከዩናይትድ ኪንግደም የፌስታል ግድባቾ ውጤታማ መሆኑን አሳውቀዋል ። እንደ ደቡብ አፍሪካ፣ ቤልጂየም፣ ዴንማርክ፣ ዩናይትድ ኪንግደም፣ ፊንላንድ፣ ሉክሰምበርግና ኔዘርላንድስ ያሉ ለፌስታል ማስከፈል መርጠዋል። ይህ ግን ውጤት ብያስገኝም ፌስታል ሙሉ በሙሉ መከልከል ቁልፍ ነው።
