Calls for a secret vote to legalise abortion have been amplified this past week with the outrageous recommendations of the Caribbean Policy Research Institute. Their recommendations are threefold: that abortion be allowed for teens without parental consent, that it be made available through public funding and that abortion should be legalised by way of ‘secret ballot’.
These recommendations take aim at the family unit, removing parental oversight for their children when they may need their parents most. It then calls for the parents and the public in general, even those who oppose abortion, to fund abortions, making them publicly available. Then, they call for parents and the public to be completely shut out of the decision making process by way of a secret vote. These recommendations fly in the face of family, democracy and the most fundamental human right, the right to life.
We call on well-thinking Jamaicans to call for the rejection of these outrageous recommendations and to focus our national energies on supporting women in crisis through initiatives such as pregnancy resource centres, strengthening the foster care system and the process of adoption.
