Dear Prolifer,

This past week we celebrated the glorious birth of Jesus Christ; the entrance of God in the flesh, into a fallen and dark world. By this time after Jesus’ birth, the visit of the three wise men to King Herod, in search of The King of Kings, would have triggered a horrific event for which “weeping and great mourning” rang out. In Matthew 2:16 we learn that King Herod ordered that all male babies up to age two should be killed, the Massacre of the Innocents. If the wise men had told Herod that the King of the Jews would be born in three months, this would have certainly included the killing of unborn children as well.

Imagine for a moment that Herod was Prime Minister in a democracy. Instead of directing the killing of thousands of baby boys, he would have to table a bill in Parliament and advocate for this evil act to take place. Imagine for a moment that you were in Herod’s Parliament or a citizen in his country, would you speak up on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves? Would you take a stand to prevent the “Massacre of the Innocents”?

We are on the brink of 2021. Jamaica will likely face the proposal that has been made by Member of Parliament Juliet Cuthbert Flynn to open the door for the killing of many babies. Days after the first Christmas in the first century, the nation was flooded with an evil directive, against which no legal opposition could be made because of the autocratic system of Herod’s government. In this coming year, we have the power and responsibility to oppose any such action; our democracy affords us this right.

In 2019 the Love March Movement launched Jamaica's first youth-led Pro-life Campaign, Fight4Me #KeepLifeAlive. We continue to fight to protect the lives of countless unborn Jamaicans; through presenting in parliament, protests, many letters to the editor and our recent GenFight Campaign which urged Jamaicans to vote for pro-life leaders. We must be vigilant and ensure that 2021 does not open the door to a massacre of innocents, but rather protects our most vulnerable.
