Justice for the Sexual Abuse and Rape victims in Ethiopia!

Justice for the Sexual Abuse and Rape victims in Ethiopia!
The Issue
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, 100+ rape cases were reported in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the space of two months from HOSPITALS. In several of these instances, the perpetrators have been the victims fathers or husbands. As we know, cases of rape and sexual abuse already tend to go underreported due to the stigma our culture places on it, as well as the actions of the Ethiopian justice system favouring the perpetrators and working against the victims. So imagine how many more cases there are that haven’t been reported to the police?
The lack of priority given to rape cases and victims in Ethiopia is nothing new. Why is it okay for rapists to walk freely with no consequences whilst victims live with the everlasting effects of the trauma caused to them? Why is it that the government is turning a blind eye to these animals who pose a huge danger and threat to women and girls in Ethiopian communities?
Cases of rape and sexual abuse NEED to be placed significantly higher on the agenda of the Ethiopian government, specifically the Ministry of Justice. Hold the perpetrators accountable for the rape and sexual assault of these girls and women. These rapists need to be identified, arrested and prosecuted for the heinous crimes they’ve committed, and held accountable each time these women and girls are stripped of their choice and basic right to say NO.
The situation is already out of hand, but urgent action needs to be taken to obtain justice, and prevent the further harming of these powerless girls and women. They have they been violated. Their voices have been silenced - not only by their rapists, but also by everybody in power who’s involved in allowing the negligence of their cases.
We urge you to take the relevant actions required to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. We urge you to escalate these cases, induce further investigation, and start scrutinising the flawed system that’s permitting sexual abusers in Ethiopia to go unpunished. We urge you to push for the reform of legislation, such as the criminalisation of martial rape, in order for these perpetrators to be held liable.
