The Issue

Rio Olympics saw a huge battalion of Indian athletes perform but we got only two medals. This is not for want of talent, but rather want of the country investing in sports.  I am not complaining but I think we could have won more if sports is made a compulsory subject in schools by changing the syllabus. This will lead to two things

1) Health Aspect - Children will be active and healthy and Vitamin D exposure will be good for them. It is not enough just to complain that our children are unable to play and only study. This way they will be able to get good physical activity,

2)Competition aspect -  Indian sports authorities will be able to spot talented youngsters and give them the necessary training to succeed in the world arena like the Olympics.

Indian has  a large population and  the largest number of youngsters in the world. But in sports we need to invest time and identify talent. This can be done if we catch them young and provide them the best facilities. The only way to do this is to make sports a compulsory subject where the marks count towards the grade.

Like cultural competitions between schools and in colleges, we need an inter school sports meet at the local, district and state levels apart from IPL type cricket for other sports like hockey, marathon, swimming, archery, shooting, gymnastics, running, boxing, wrestling, volleyball, handball, basketball, polo and cycling.

There are so many children who are talented but lack exposure and it is good for all around health of the next generation.

So, kindly support this petition  so the government authorities can introduce sports as a subject from kindergarten in all school syllabus - CBSE, Metric and state board

Thanking you,

Deepa Kandaswamy - an Indian like you.
