Open the Cabin Crew Jobs for all Genders

India is the 3rd-largest civil aviation market in the world with a potential of becoming 2nd-largest aviation market by 2020. IndiGo, Air India, Spicejet, GoAir, Vistara and AirAsia India are the major carriers. Together, these carriers employ thousands of cabin crew members.

  • However, with an exception of Vistara, none of the other airlines hire transgender persons as cabin crew.
  • Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir are not hiring Male cabin crew members, either.
  • SpiceJet, which is only hiring Female cabin crew currently, does not hire married women.
  • This year, during LGBTQ+ Pride month, Indigo uploaded beautiful posters to celebrate diversity, however, it hires female cabin crew only.

This is absurd. Job opportunities in our country should be open for all individuals, irrespective of their gender. The responsibilities of a cabin attendant can be carried out equally well by an individual of any gender if they are passionate about the job and have the necessary skills required to do it. The practice of putting a blanket ban on certain genders needs to end. It is 2019, our Constitution legally recognizes transgender persons. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016 prohibits discrimination against a transgender person in areas such as employment, yet these airlines keep their jobs closed to transgender persons and Men.

We want IndiGo, Air India, Spicejet, GoAir, AirAsia and all other carriers to open cabin crew jobs for all genders.

Why do most of these Airlines hire females cabin crew only? 

Females, on an average, weigh less than men. Less weight on the flight means lesser fuel consumption. Lesser fuel consumption equals increased profits. Yes, this is GoAir's official response. Air India had informed Shanavi Ponnusamy, a transwoman, that they cannot offer her the cabin crew job because their recruitment policy did not have this category. Her case against Air India is currently pending in the Supreme Court. Other airlines have not officially clarified why they do not hire Men and transgender persons.

Airlines have the option of reducing weight of many other items onboard instead of banning people of a particular gender, for example, using light-weight cutlery & trays, low-weight magazines, serving water in lighter disposable biodegradable cups as compared to plastic bottles, conducting more thorough checks of checkin-luggage weight before boarding, and so on.
