Prevent Vice President Kamala Harris from Touring the 1200 Building in Parkland

Prevent Vice President Kamala Harris from Touring the 1200 Building in Parkland
The Issue
As a parent of a student who was present during the tragic event at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, I am deeply concerned about the potential retraumatization of our community by a visit from VP Kamala Harris on 3/23/24. The 1200 building in Parkland, Florida is not just another structure; it's a painful reminder of the day we lost innocent students and teachers to senseless violence. Six years later, this site continues to trigger deep emotional responses from students, parents, and members of our community.
Upon speaking with other members of our Parkland community, we believe thar that VP Harris’s visit would only serve to bring back traumatic memories for those affected by this tragedy. Furthermore, with media presence likely accompanying her visitation, could potentially turn this solemn site into an unwanted spectacle.
The building is scheduled for demolition later this year - a decision made after careful consideration by local authorities and mental health professionals who understand its impact on our community's collective psyche (source: Broward County Public Schools). It is not meant to be used as a political tool or tourist destination.
Therefore, we respectfully request that Vice President Harris refrains from visiting the 1200 building on 3/23/24 several months before its planned demolition. She had many opportunities to do so in past years, but obviously is choosing election year to further an agenda. We ask her instead to honor our community's healing process by respecting our wish for privacy during these challenging times. Please sign this petition if you stand with us in protecting the emotional well-being of Parkland residents.
