The MNR tried looking for a bear involved in a pet conflict in Georgian Bluffs but the bear left the area.
As cottagers and nature enthusiasts, we value the pristine environment of Honey Harbour, a place where wildlife and humans have coexisted harmoniously for generations. Yet, the stakes have been raised as the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) considers setting traps to capture this bear. Trapping, followed by killing, is often a typical but regrettable management solution, and this is why our presence is crucial: to advocate for a more humane approach that addresses the root of the problem rather than simply the symptom.
The bear in question has entered cottages primarily due to attractants, such as poorly secured garbage, leftover food, and perhaps open access during cottage rental transitions by inexperienced visitors. By mitigating these attractants, we can prevent the recurrence of these intrusions without resorting to lethal measures.
Firstly, we propose an educational campaign targeted at both locals and visitors. This campaign should inform everyone about proper bear-safe practices, such as securing garbage, never leaving food outdoors, and understanding the correct way to secure cottages. Furthermore, installing bear-proof containers and providing guidelines for renters and rental agencies can significantly reduce human-bear encounters.
Secondly, implementing communal efforts to monitor and manage attractants around Deer Island can foster community engagement and ensure long-term success in preventing bear intrusions. Creating an organized neighborhood watch that reports bear sightings and interactions will keep everyone informed and ready to adapt procedures accordingly.
