Prevent Tuition Fee Hike, Regulate Student Housing Costs and Improve Accommodation Now!
The Issue
University fees for home students are already unaffordable for many people, at £9,250 a year. Universities want to raise tuition fees next year to £13,000, creating increased debt for our students and it will deter more people from going to university, forcing some universities to close and resulting in one of the least well-educated nation in the developed world. If we don’t act now, the Government will approve this increase, resulting in our young people having increased debt on graduation. In addition, accommodation in halls is not available for all, and can be very expensive. Private accommodation is often in a poor state, owned by unscrupulous, greedy landlords, and very expensive. Examples for halls that I have seen are around £11k - £15k per year, and up to £50k for a 7 person house in Bristol privately. Many private halls are in a very poor state, with faulty electrics and plumbing, and mould, as well as filth. Some are infested with fleas or rodents, but students are being fleeced for high rents as they struggle to find accommodation. The added stress of debt and poor accommodation is exacerbating levels of mental health issues with our students. No parent wants this for their young person. Please sign this petition to keep tuition fees the same, and for legislation to put a cap on student accommodation costs, to give our students a decent place to live whilst studying which is value for money, and to encourage more potential students to apply to university. We want our young people to succeed in their lives, not to be barred by the prospect of increasing debt.
