Prevent Tragedy in Family Court—Make Mental Health Evaluations Mandatory

The Issue

I’m a mom, a full-time student, and someone who has lived through the trauma of the family court system. I’ve seen firsthand how custody battles can tear families apart—but what’s worse is how often they ignore the one person who matters most: the child.

Family court makes life-altering decisions about where a child will live, yet rarely stops to ask the most important question—how is the child actually doing? Most children involved in custody disputes are never given a mental health evaluation. They’re expected to carry the emotional weight of adult conflict, with no support, no voice, and no professional insight into their well-being.

This needs to change. I’m calling for a federal law that mandates free, trauma-informed mental health evaluations for every child involved in a custody case. These evaluations would be done by licensed professionals and used to guide decisions based on what is truly best for the child—not just what appears fair on paper.

This isn’t just about adding a service. It’s about protecting children from being placed in emotionally unsafe or dangerous situations simply because the court didn’t have the full picture.

We owe our children more than assumptions. We owe them truth, safety, and a chance to be heard. If you believe every child deserves to be seen, supported, and protected, please help me turn this vision into action.
