I am a resident of Hanson, MA, and it deeply saddens me to see our community being known for an act that does not reflect our values. Our local wildlife, including Pumpkin the bear, are part of what makes our town unique. However, due to a natural instinctive action in which Pumpkin killed a goat, the Hanson police have decided that he must be euthanized.

This is not just about one bear; this is about how we treat wildlife in general. Animals acting naturally within their shrinking habitats should not be met with extermination as a solution. According to data from Defenders of Wildlife (2019), human activities are causing habitat loss at an alarming rate and this often leads animals into human-populated areas in search for food.

We need to find alternative solutions that respect both our community's safety and animal life. Let us work together with local authorities and wildlife experts to develop non-lethal management strategies such as relocation or creating better barriers between wild animals and livestock/pets.
