The Issue

On the 15th of September, a curious and perhaps bewildered fox found itself on the football field in Saint-Ursanne (JU) and momentarily brought a local cup match to a halt. This chance encounter, caught on video, soon went viral throughout the canton of Jura. The fox, a small wanderer, had unintentionally become a village celebrity, sparking smiles and fond laughter with its unexpected antics.

However, this tale took a heartbreaking turn. Just weeks later, on a report from the very football club that hosted its fleeting appearance, the fox was shot dead by a gamekeeper, as reported by "Le Matin." The Champs-Fallat square, where the match took place, is nestled in nature's embrace, softly tucked between the Doubs and the SBB viaduct. Despite its proximity to natural habitats, the approach to wildlife seemed woefully heavy-handed and tragic.

This petition calls for the immediate reevaluation of current wildlife management protocols within the Jura region. We need a more compassionate and nuanced policy—one that favours coexistence and understanding over fear and eradication. Such policies should include non-lethal methods for managing wildlife interactions, providing training for clubs and communities on how to live harmoniously with these animals, that have as much right to the land as we do.

Let's use this tragic incident as a stepping stone towards greater awareness and responsibility in our interaction with the natural world. By signing this petition, you join us in urging local authorities and environmental agencies to act decisively to protect our wildlife and prevent unnecessary killings in the future. Sign to advocate for Saint-Ursanne and the canton of Jura's rich biodiversity, so no more beloved creatures fall victim to inadequate management."
